Global Sinhala Dhamma Discussion Series (Teleconference): 62nd Meeting (January 17, 2009)

The teleconference on Saturday, January 17, 2009, 7:00PM-9:00PM (EST), will be moderated and led by Ven. Y. Sankichcha from Great Lakes Buddhist Vihara, MI, USA.

"Ariyapariyesana Sutta" The Noble Search - MN 26: This sutta given by the Buddha at Savatthi. The Buddha recounted his life from the time he was born in the human world as the son of King Suddhodana till the moment of the great discourse on the Turning of the Wheel of Dhamma, giving details of his renunciation, initial wrong practices of severe asceticism and final discovery of the Noble Path of Eight Constituents. In particular, stress was laid on two different types of quests, the Noble and the Ignoble. He explained that it was extremely unwise to go after sensual pleasures which subject one to ageing, disease and death. The most noble quest was to seek out that which will liberate one from ageing, disease and death.

Global Sinhala Dhamma Discussion Series (Teleconference): 61st Meeting (January 10, 2009)

The teleconference on Saturday, January 10, 2009, 7:00PM-9:00PM (EST), will be moderated and led by Ven. Y. Sankichcha from Great Lakes Buddhist Vihara, MI, USA.

This Dhamma Discussion will be based on: "Latukikopama Sutra" Majjhima Nikaya,MN 66: Udāyī recalls the rules made by the Buddha regarding the hours for meals, how such rules were added to, until, in the end, any meal out of hours was forbidden; and he mentions how, though at first these rules involved hardship, in the end they were very helpful in dispelling unhappy states of consciousness and in implanting happy ones. The Buddha agrees, but adds that many people are foolish, and consider such sacrifices insignificant, growing discontented when asked to make them. But this insignificant thing develops into a bond strong enough to hold them fast. Some people are like quails caught in traps, unable to escape from their bonds, others like mighty elephants, bursting their bonds and going where they wish. Thus there are four types of individuals, differing according as to whether they are attached to their bonds or detached from them.
